Countrified Interview with Ryan Laird
Tell us about your latest single “Gamble on Love”? Did you write it?
I co-wrote it with a couple of my songwriting pals in Nashville. I married this past year and one of my collaborators was looking for a fresh shot at love when we were writing the song, so we wrote it about going all in, without inhibitions, and taking a Gamble on Love!
You’ve been described as the Ed Sheeran of Canada, do you see any similarities? Favourite Ed Sheeran song?
I think Ed is super talented. The main similarity is that we both utilize modern musical technology to build musical loops live on stage. These loops are essentially numerous layers of different musical parts that are recorded on top of one-another on-the-fly, to create the effect of a full band sound from one artist on stage. I love to improvise with these loops and my audiences tend to get a real kick out of watching me create them!
Keith Urban is also an influence for his guitar chops and general musicianship.
Any summer plans? Any festivals?
Gamble on Love is building great momentum currently at country radio across Canada and I have a fun, humorous music video filmed in Nashville coming soon that I know fans are going to get a laugh out of watching! I also have a cross-Canada tour scheduled for this fall.
You have some Canadian dates scheduled for the this fall, any places you haven’t been before? Places you are looking forward to playing?
I’m excited to tour across much of Canada this fall, with stops planned in many rural towns. I’ve had the opportunity to tour across most of our great nation over the years and we truly live in a diverse region of the world. There is so much to see and do and many awesome people of various ethnic backgrounds to meet all across Canada. I’m looking forward to sharing Gamble on Love along with other new songs with many of these music fans this fall!
As for places I have yet to visit.. I would like to visit the Yukon and Newfoundland.. looks beautiful!
